Radius

Zero, and there is no second step. A mount board and a crop mark have no radii, so nothing in this theme is rounded: not a button, a field, a chip or a dialog.

The veil, doing its job

Veiled: grayscaled, then composited toward the board through --frame-veil.

Unveiled: the plate at full strength, which is what the drawn rectangle is filled with.

The signature

Every photograph is the whole frame it came out of, veiled, with the delivered rectangle drawn on it at full strength. The overhang is sensor divided by cut, so the drawing means the same thing at 320px and at 1200px.

ui/cut — register, placement, and the state that draws nothing

Two composition axes and one honest empty state, in one frame. Flush registers the cut to the text measure and lets the negative overhang both margins; inset floats it inside a fully visible frame. Foot puts the record on a hairline under the cut; margin puts it in the veil on a board chip.

Six things every tier above excludes. They are here rather than in a terms document because you would sign the terms document without reading it.

You cannot resell it or license it on

The licence is yours to use, not yours to pass on. If a partner, a contractor or a magazine you work with wants the same frame, they take their own licence and I quote them the same rate as anyone else.
This is the one that catches people out, usually with a supplier who put the picture in their own brochure. Send them to me and it is a five-minute conversation.
You cannot use it as a logo or a trade mark

A photograph can carry an identity for a campaign. It cannot become the identity. Registering any part of a frame as a mark, or using it as one, is outside every tier on this page.
If that is what you want, say so at the brief stage. It is a different piece of work with a different fee, and it is worth doing properly.
You cannot use it to train a model

No frame licensed here may be used as training data, and none may be handed to a third party for that purpose. That holds whether the licence is live or has run out.
I am not making a point about the technology. I am saying that a frame fed to a model leaves the register, and the register is what the whole of this site is built on.
You cannot alter what the picture shows

Crop it to fit your page, correct it for your press, put type over it. All of that is normal and none of it needs asking.
What is not allowed is a change to the fact of what was photographed: adding plant that was not on site, removing a defect, compositing two visits into one day. These are records of construction, and people rely on them being records.
The licence does not move if the company is sold

A licence is granted to the client named on it. It does not transfer with a sale, a merger or a change of name, and a new owner does not inherit it.
Re-issuing one to the new entity is routine and I have never refused. It just has to be asked for, so the register stays true.
Exclusivity is not included unless it is written in

By default I can license the same frame to somebody else, including within your sector. Most clients never mind; the frames that go to a trade title are usually the ones the client wanted seen.
If you need a frame held back, that is an exclusivity term and it is priced separately, by the length of the hold. Ask before the shoot rather than after, because the answer is cheaper then.

The practice

A one-person practice on Teesside

Ruth Calvert. I photograph infrastructure and industry for the engineers who build it, the architects who draw it and the trade press that prints it. 6 commissions are in the register and 14 frames have been delivered against them, from Saltburn-by-the-Sea since 2017.

A commission buys shoot days. A licence buys one rectangle out of one frame, for a stated term, in a stated territory. The two are priced apart because they are two different things, and both are on the site.

The work is infrastructure, industry and the buildings around them. Nothing else is offered.

These apply to every commission and they do not change between clients. They are here rather than behind a link because a form that asks for a commitment should show what it is asking for.

What a day covers

£1,150

A shooting day is up to eight working hours on one site, the travel to it, and the edit that follows. A half day is up to four hours and is £690.

Hours past that are agreed on the day, with you, before they are worked. Nothing appears on an invoice that was not said out loud on site.

When usage is agreed

Before, not after

Shooting and usage are two figures and they are quoted together, before the shoot. The fees, terms and territories are the ones printed on the licensing page, and a brief is accepted at those.

A second use of the same frame is a second licence. That is not a penalty: it is why the first one costs what it costs rather than being priced for every use you might one day have.

Cancellation and weather

The week it falls in

A date cancelled before the week it falls in costs nothing. Inside that week the day is charged, because it is a day that can no longer be sold to anyone else.

Weather is not a cancellation on an outdoor job. The date moves, once, at no charge. Light on this coast is the reason half the work here looks the way it does and it is not something either of us is arguing with.

Travel, access and site conditions

£0.45 a mile

Sites in Teesside and the north-east coast carry no travel charge. Beyond that, mileage is itemised at £0.45 a mile and appears on the quote rather than on the invoice.

Escorted access, permits, inductions and a working window shorter than a day change the number of days a job needs, not the rate a day is charged at. Say them in the brief and they are in the quote.

Every job is worked in the practice's own PPE, with its own public liability cover. A copy goes to your safety officer on request.

The practice

The photographs remain the property of Bellows. What a client buys is usage: a named frame, a named form, for a term, in a territory.

A credit is expected wherever the publication carries one. Where it does not, the licence is unaffected and nobody is going to ring you about it.
