Checks whether the extracted name also appears outside scripts, metadata, and obvious hidden elements. CSS and JavaScript are not rendered.

Next step. Render the product name in the initial page body. Review the match if the schema uses different wording.

  1. Confirm merchant approval, the accepted feed format, supported countries, and currencies with your integration provider.
  2. Check ingestion reports for this exact item and variant, including rejected rows and search eligibility settings.
  3. Verify that stable item IDs, selected options, seller, images, price, and stock match the current product page.
  4. Check refresh cadence and recent successful updates. A single page scan cannot verify feed freshness.
  5. Inspect CDN or server logs for verified OAI-SearchBot requests. robots.txt permission does not prove firewall access.
  6. Review genuine customer feedback, shipping terms, returns, and product suitability manually.

THE FIELD GUIDE

One catalog. Different discovery paths.

Official guidance, on demand. Reviewed 2026-09-14.

GoogleGooglebot

Search and generative AI share SEO foundations. Product snippets and merchant listings have different markup rules. Merchant Center provides another product-data route.

Access. Googlebot permission, indexing, and snippet controls matter. Google also documents a Search Console generative AI inclusion setting; a page scan cannot read that setting.

Commerce. A zero price can support product snippets, but merchant listing markup requires a positive price and a direct Offer. A structured-data pass is not Merchant Center acceptance.

Verify. Verify the inherited Search Console AI control, actual indexing, Merchant Center diagnostics, and page/feed agreement. Account settings are unverified here.

Measure. Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report and product enhancement reports, then measure store conversions separately.

Bingbingbot

Bing’s index supports search, Copilot, and grounding. Clear entities, accurate markup, stable URLs, useful content, and timely updates support those experiences.

Access. noindex affects indexing. noarchive prevents Chat/Copilot linking; nocache limits use to URL, title, and snippet. When both occur, Bing documents nocache precedence. These controls do not all remove ordinary search results.

Commerce. Microsoft Merchant Center and its product catalog are separate from a public page scan. IndexNow helps notify participating engines of changes; it does not guarantee indexing.

Verify. Verify Bing Webmaster Tools, Merchant Center item status, real Bingbot requests, and IndexNow delivery. A missing visible IndexNow script does not establish missing integration.

Measure. Use Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance for citation observations, plus referral and conversion data. A citation count is not a revenue or ranking guarantee.

ChatGPTOAI-SearchBot

Web search and approved merchant product feeds are separate discovery routes. Readable product facts help the scanner assess preparation; the recommendation formula is not public.

Access. OAI-SearchBot controls search crawling. GPTBot is a separate training preference. ChatGPT-User is user-initiated retrieval, not a search-inclusion gate.

Commerce. Review feed approval, exact item/variant identity, ingestion, freshness, and supported markets. Shopify Catalog can deliver eligible products to enabled agentic storefronts even when web crawlers are blocked. A page scan does not verify that delivery.

Verify. Verify real crawler access and accepted, current feed records. The page-to-feed field map is a set of candidates, never proof of ingestion.

Measure. Track accepted feed records, referred visits, and conversions. Record date, market, and conversation context when sampling shopping answers.

PerplexityPerplexityBot

PerplexityBot gathers pages for search results and links. It is not a foundation-model training crawler. Perplexity also offers a merchant program.

Access. Allow PerplexityBot and verify its published IP ranges at the firewall. Perplexity-User handles user requests and generally ignores robots.txt; its robots rule is not scored as a search gate.

Commerce. Merchant onboarding, product data, and checkout are a separate path. We do not assume OpenAI’s feed fields are Perplexity’s ingestion contract.

Verify. Confirm your actual merchant integration and current specification with Perplexity. Check crawler logs, item freshness, and public product images.

Measure. Use available merchant reporting and store referral/conversion data. Sample real shopping questions without treating one answer as a universal ranking.

ClaudeClaude-SearchBot

Claude-SearchBot supports web search. Claude-User fetches pages for user requests, with separate robots controls. ClaudeBot is a separate training crawler.

Access. A Claude-SearchBot block affects search indexing; a Claude-User block affects user-requested retrieval. Both are checked separately here. Blocking ClaudeBot earns no penalty.

Commerce. Anthropic documents a blueprint for commerce agents connected to a merchant’s own catalog tools. That is different from submitting a universal public Claude shopping feed; no such feed contract was established in the reviewed documentation.

Verify. Verify both search and user-fetch access. For a Claude-powered store agent, ground product claims in catalog tools and validate writes and checkout in the application.

Measure. Measure actual referred visits and conversions. For an embedded commerce agent, evaluate catalog accuracy, successful tasks, and confirmed checkout outcomes.

Make the store usable by agents

Search discovery and completing a shopping task are different. Browser agents can use HTML, the accessibility tree, and screenshots. Give buttons clear names, label variant controls, preserve selected state, and keep price and stock visible.

For catalog tools, return stable product IDs and current facts. Prepare edits and checkout as explicit actions with reviewable outcomes. Agent protocols and checkout integrations are not universal SEO prerequisites.

THE DISCOVERY PLAYBOOK · REVIEWED 2026-09-14

How products become discoverable in ChatGPT.

Access opens the web route. Clear product facts support understanding. Accepted, current feeds support shopping experiences. A recommendation is an outcome to measure.

01

Two routes into discovery

Keep your public product pages readable and check your merchant feed integration separately.

Why this matters

ChatGPT can discover pages through web search, and products through merchant catalog feeds. Product markup makes page facts easier to extract; a valid Google rich result does not establish an accepted OpenAI feed or a ChatGPT recommendation.

Official source
02

Search access and training are separate

Allow the intended product paths for OAI-SearchBot and check your CDN against OpenAI’s published crawler IP ranges. A successful scan by our crawler does not prove OpenAI can fetch the page.

Why this matters

OAI-SearchBot serves search. GPTBot serves model training. You can allow search while blocking training. ChatGPT-User visits on a user’s behalf; its permission does not determine search inclusion. Robots changes may take about 24 hours to propagate.

Official source
03

Match the shopper’s actual need

Use specific, factual details. Repeating keywords or instructions to recommend your product earns no points.

Why this matters

Descriptions, attributes, images, and current offers give ChatGPT usable product facts. Our practical inference: describe use cases, dimensions, materials, compatibility, and limitations that help someone choose. The documentation does not provide a reproducible ranking formula.

Official source
04

Keep each variant and seller distinct

Connect the scanned URL to the right purchasable variant. Never substitute the brand for an unknown seller or invent a GTIN.

Why this matters

A size or color can have its own price, stock, image, and URL. Feed identifiers should remain stable as those facts change. The brand and the merchant supplying the offer are different identities.

Official source
05

Fresh data needs an operating process

Verify ingestion results and rejected items, then synchronize changes to price, stock, promotions, and variants. Confirm the supported market and currency during onboarding.

Why this matters

One fetched page cannot establish inventory accuracy over time. OpenAI recommends daily full feeds with API updates during the day, or API snapshots and updates for small feeds. Onboarding currently requires approval.

Official source
06

Reviews and policies need evidence

Keep review averages and counts tied to the same population. Do not invent reviews. Missing reviews or optional policy markup do not reduce the ChatGPT page score.

Why this matters

Real review aggregates can help describe a product. Product reviews and store reviews have different scopes. Shipping charges, delivery expectations, and return terms should be accurate; a policy URL alone does not prove its contents.

Official source
07

Discovery, ads, and checkout have separate controls

Use the specification for your agreed integration. llms.txt, training access, and checkout installation earn no discovery points in this scanner.

Why this matters

A discovery feed is not a checkout integration. Ads have their own eligibility controls. An eligibility flag is not a guarantee of display. Feed field names and requirements also differ between file uploads, APIs, and Google-compatible integrations.

Official source
08

Measure outcomes after fixing the foundations

Track feed acceptance, verified crawler requests, referred visits, and conversions. Keep a repeatable set of realistic shopping questions and record the date, market, and context of each observation.

Why this matters

This scan measures observable technical preparation. It cannot verify inclusion in ChatGPT, recommendation position, competitor preference, or conversion. Results for an individual shopping question are not a universal ranking.

Our transparent 100-point rubric

These weights are ProductRating’s engineering choices. They measure extractable page facts and access signals, not a proprietary recommendation algorithm. Product schema is the scanner’s main extraction method; it is not established as a requirement for ChatGPT discovery.

  • Web permissions: 35 points — OAI-SearchBot robots permission 25, page indexing restrictions 10.
  • Identity and selection: 22 points — name 6, stable identifier 5, brand 3, seller 3, product/offer selection 5.
  • Product content: 19 points — description 6, image URL 5, name text match 4, description text match 4.
  • Offer clarity: 19 points — specific price 10, currency format 4, stock state 5.
  • Canonical page: 5 points.

Observed checks earn full credit, review warnings half, failures zero. Unknown checks keep their weight in the denominator: the report shows observed points, the possible range, and weighted coverage. Missing expected fields remain scored. Unscored manual checks are outside coverage.

A robots block overrides the readiness label. A noindex/none directive shows an indexing restriction. These apply to our assessment of the web route; they do not establish merchant-feed status. A 100 means this limited rubric passed, not that a product is indexed or will be recommended.

Absent reviews, llms.txt, training permissions, ads, checkout, and optional shipping/return markup earn no bonus or penalty. The broad SEO checklist retains its own separately labeled, assessed-only score.

How is the broad SEO score calculated?

Checks are weighted by their technical importance. Passed checks earn full credit, warnings half, and failed checks zero. Informational, unavailable, and inapplicable checks are excluded. SEO coverage shows how many scored checks could be assessed. The provider views use fixed 100-point rubrics, with unknowns left open. Each finding shows its weight. Scores are our heuristic, not a Google or Bing metric.

No ratings? No penalty. We only validate ratings when markup is present. Training crawler preferences and llms.txt never affect the score.

What can’t this scan tell me?
  • Initial HTML only; JavaScript is not executed. Client-rendered product data may be missed.
  • This is a technical readiness heuristic, not a ranking, indexing, rich-result, or AI citation guarantee.
  • Crawler rules describe robots.txt permissions; actual crawler access, firewall rules, and search index status are not verified.
  • One Product and Offer are scored, preferring a URL match. Linked remote schemas, Microdata itemref, and advanced RDFa relationships are not resolved.
  • Reviews require manual authenticity checks. Shipping/returns are presence checks; this is not a complete schema validator.
  • OpenAI merchant approval, feed ingestion, freshness, supported markets, and search eligibility cannot be verified from a page scan.

Merchant Center feeds, Search Console data, Core Web Vitals, and actual AI citations need separate tools.

Do AI bots need special schema?

Google’s AI features use the same search foundations, with no special AI schema requirement. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude have separate search crawler controls. Training permissions are a separate choice.
